School Field Trips
We believe that children learn information best by being actively involved. Our field trip offerings have been linked to topics from the CAPS curriculum, but we are always happy to tailor an outing to your requirements. This includes bringing the experience to the school to avoid travel costs, incorporating other learning points (such as map skills, or multiplication, for example), and even providing a short quiz for teachers to use as a continuous assessment tool, after the conclusion of the field trip. “I love using Guardian of the Deep to help children develop an understanding of their environment and to highlight the importance of caring for the natural world around them” ~ Cathy Eitzen – Grade 1 Educator from Kommetjie Primary School
When you sign up for a field trip with us, you can expect the following:
- To be given information that is up to date and scientifically accurate
- To have fun
- To be left with a new-found respect and understanding for our environment
- To have some ideas of ways in which you can make a difference on a daily basis
- To do a clean-up of the space we have visited (health and safety permitting)
- To have some of your prior knowledge challenged!
Our goal is to leave students excited about the power that they have to make a difference, and to nurture and protect the environment, now that they have a deeper understanding about its importance.
Our field trips are currently available for grades 1-7, but we also do cover high school groups on request.
Foundation Phase: We explore and learn about the environment in relation to specific life skills topics. These sessions can take place at the beach, wetland or other outdoor locations, even on the school field if transport is an issue. Teachers can also choose to have worksheets or colouring-in pages with information about the topic, as part of the experience.
Intermediate and Senior Phase Field Trips: We focus on extending their scientific knowledge by getting them to think more critically about the world as we know it. Considering the waste we create and how our choices can have an impact on the amount of waste we produce. Critical thinking and knowing how to question the information we are presented with daily, are skills that have become increasingly valuable in recent years. Field Trips still take place in the environment, as it creates a clearer image for the students.
